Growing up, school told me a wrapped-in-a-big-shin

Growing up, school told me a wrapped-in-a-big-shiny-bow story of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the civil rights movement in general. It was short and sweet when it should have been long and in-depth. I believed, at the end of that story told to my ten-year-old self, that the movement had solved the problem of inequality.⁠⠀
.⁠⠀
My point is not to highlight how ill-equipped public school left me for the realities of the world, but to reflect where this leaves me now. We don’t give kids the benefit of the doubt. They can handle more truths than the cushy versions we feed them. It’s easier on adults to say it quickly and move on from discomfort.⁠⠀
.⁠⠀
As an adult, I’ve learned the truth the hard way. Having friends who are people of color, I’ve seen with my own eyes how their experience differs from mine. I’ve been woken up to my privilege for simply being born white.⁠⠀
.⁠⠀
Then this past June, I watched with my fellow Minnesotans as our city was thrust front and center. The heaviness of the movement started over the brutal killing of George Floyd, compounded by centuries of oppression, was a necessary wake up call.⁠⠀

Today, I reflect on the life of a man who was not afraid to make a stand for all. Unfortunately, the climate of today’s world seems eerily familiar to the times of MLK. I don’t have answers, but I think we as a nation need to take the time to check our values.⁠⠀
.⁠⠀
So, for all of us whose ten-year-old selves were not trusted with the truth, let’s remember we set the example for the future generation. Let’s be open and truthful. For they will inherit the world and their values can and should be better than ours.⁠⠀

Create usable items that display images. Mugs, magnets, or key chains are perfect for parents, grandparents, aunts & uncles.

Necklaces, lockets or bracelets are great for kids (siblings, cousins or friends could have matching items!). When I was younger, my cousin Michelle & I had necklaces that broke down the middle and we each got a half (remember those?!).

The point is, digital images are best enjoyed when offline! Review the last week's post for more ideas and take advantage of free time now!

DAY 4: PRINTING PHOTOS Design a book online to have printed! There are countless places to design and print a book, the most recognizable probably being Shutterfly.

I personally find the design software on the Shutterfly site difficult to use. Hop around and read reviews! Check today's stories for my recommendations.

Birthdays, vacations, recap a year, etc. are all ideas for utilizing these books.

One year, I designed each of my nieces an ABC's of ______ book. It was 26 pages, with a letter a the top of each page and different pictures that went with said letter.

For example, on the letter B page, I used photos of us at a baseball game. It was time consuming, but fun to create. Seeing their faces as they flipped through was worth it!

I'm talking about using papers, stickers & embellishments to design a page that'll perfectly display your images. Digital has stolen our basic urge to create and scrapbooking is a great way to reclaim it.

Scrapbooking is perfect for kids as well. They will astound you with their creativity. Plus, using scissors promotes dexterity and organizing items to fit within a page promotes spatial awareness. Kids will learn as they create and they'll LOVE to look at their scrapbook for years to come.

Not feeling scrapbooking? Choose classic photo ablums with sleeves that you slide the print into! They still exist! There's something nostalgic and wonderful about these.

Being able to flip through your memories without messing with technology is healthy. Grab your fav at your local craft store and organize away!

DAY 2: PRINTING TIPS Print your favorites (professional or not) big and use as art in your household!

Frames and canvas lend themselves to putting a professional finish on your big photographs. I recommend 16x20 or larger. Go way outside the box and create a digital collage in Canva or similar and print/frame that!
