The first reason to start learning videography to add to your photo business is because it’s a breath of creative fresh air. I don’t know about you but when I got to year 15 of doing wedding photography, I was kind of bored. I didn’t feel creatively challenged and every wedding started to feel like Groundhog Day. Learning video challenged my creative brain to think about light, composition, and storytelling in a whole new way.
So ask yourself, am I creatively challenged in a way that makes my job fulfilling?
The second reason to become a family filmmaker to add to your photo business is because you already know how to operate a camera. You understand the principles of aperture and shutter speed, iso, shooting in manual and all the other technical parts of working a camera. All of these technical parts also pertain to video so you’re halfway there! With a few more lessons and some practice, you'll be filming before you know it!
The third reason to start learning videography to add to your photo business is to make another stream of income. Whether to bundle your photo & video services or provide video as an add-on, you’ll be able to earn more as well as have a more diverse menu of services for your clients to choose from. Studies show that entrepreneurs whose businesses have mulitple streams of income are more likely to succeed.
So, by learning filmmaking, you can add short films, longer form films, small business films, and more! Your clients will love the options and YOU will earn more income. Win, win!
The fourth reason to add video to your services is to tell people’s stories. Sure, you can tell stories through your photos but using movement and audio is a game changer. All of the clients I’ve served through family videography are blown away by how much they love it, how easy the session is for them, and how meaningful it is as time passes. What greater gift to give another person than the story of their life to have and pass on forever!
As a family filmmaker, some ways that I help tell the stories of my clients is through day-in-the-life films, interviews and including the elders of the family to share advice with the other members of the family!
