Seven Steps to Prepare for a Photo Session

There are a lot of things you can do, but here are my top seven steps to prepare for a photo session. The last thing any photographer wants is for the parents (let's be honest, moms) to be stressed out. Sometimes, having a list of steps can help alleviate some of the last-minute panic. So grab a Post-it and jot down these steps. Or, you can snag this free checklist in printable form!

Steps to Prepare:

  1. Choose the right time and location: Choose a time and location that works best for your family. Consider your family's schedule and preferences, and choose a location that is meaningful or visually interesting. PRO TIP: Ask your photographer for their favorite locations. They have likely scouted the best spots and will have some great options for you to choose from.

  2. Coordinate outfits: Start with mom's outfit. That's right, if mom shows up confident and feeling great, that'll rub off on the rest of the family. Next, coordinate outfits for your family that complement each other and fit your style and mood. Consider using similar colors or styles to create a cohesive look. 3. Communicate with the photographer: Communicate with the photographer before the session to discuss any specific requests or concerns you may have. This can include the type of shots you want, the location of the shoot, and any special props or poses you want to include. Believe me, knowing what the client prefers is very helpful to your photographer so don't skip it!

  4. Get enough rest: It may sound silly, but making sure you and your family members are well-rested and well-fed before the session is crucial. This can help you look and feel your best during the photoshoot. It'll also help eliminate the possibility of melt downs with the littles. I understand the way a child sleeps one night is not always in your control, but extra naps can also be helpful!

  5. Get haircuts and grooming: Schedule haircuts and grooming appointments for your family members about a week before the photoshoot. This way, there's enough time to get used to how to style a fresh haircut and everyone can arrive knowing they look sharp!

  6. Pack a bag: Bring a bag with extra clothes, snacks, and any other items you may need during the session. This is especially helpful with kids under school-age. Bringing favorite toys or comfort items can help coax a smile when nothing else may work. And hangry kids equal sad and angry photos. No one wants that!

  7. Relax and have fun: On the day of the session, it's time to hand the reigns to your photographer. Take a deep breath, try to relax and have fun. Be yourself and let the photographer capture your family's unique personality and dynamic.

There you have it! While this may not eliminate all of the stress, it can give you a starting and ending point of the things to do so you're the most prepared you can be. Don't stress if one of the items gets forgotten or doesn't go the way you planned.
