Here are seven ways to help kids cooperate during photos.
Getting kids to cooperate during a photo session can be a challenge and as a family photographer since 2007, I've seen it all. Many clients have been disappointed at the end of their session, thinking there were likely no great photos based on the behavior of their kids. These clients are ALWAYS pleasantly surprised upon the delivery of their gallery when they see the moments that were captured.
Start by not expecting perfection out of your kids. Trust your photographer to take the reins and instead, make having a fun, memorable experience your goal!
Make it fun.
Find a photographer who keeps the atmosphere fun and lighthearted to help kids feel relaxed and comfortable. You can play games, tell jokes, or engage in other activities that make the photo session enjoyable. When kids need a boost, a couple of my favorites are follow-the-leader or red light, green light. The photos show movement and are playful!
2. Offer rewards
Offer rewards for good behavior or cooperation, such as a small treat or a special activity after the session. This can go a long way in getting kids cooperate during photos. Make it a family date by going to a new park or grabbing ice cream!
Be patient
Be patient with your children and give them time to warm up to the photographer and the environment. When I show up to a session, I always take a moment to get down on the level of each child to introduce myself. Often, showing them my camera and letting them push the shutter button helps break the ice. I also allow breaks as needed and try to keep the session low-pressure.
Use props or toys
Bring along some of your child's favorite toys or any meaningful props that can help keep kids entertained and engaged during photos.
Let them be themselves
Allow your children to be themselves and capture their unique personalities and expressions. Don't worry too much about getting perfect poses or forced smiles. Your photographer sees and captures way more than you may think, so don't fret if you feel like there won't be any good shots!
Plan around their schedule
Schedule the session around your child's schedule, such as nap time or meal time, to help ensure that they are well-rested and fed during the session.
Involve them in the planning
Involve your children in the planning process and ask for their input on outfits, poses, and other details. This can help them feel more invested in the session and more cooperative during the shoot. Sometimes, even letting them pick their own outfit for a few photos, then changing to a more "formal" one can be a great way to remember their unique personalities.
Remember that getting great photos of kids can take some time and effort, but with the right approach, you can create a fun and memorable experience for your family. Kids feed off the energy of the adults, so remember to not take it too seriously and have fun yourself. Trust your photographer to pull out the smiles and authentic moments. Before you know it, yours kids cooperate during photos!
